Statement of Press conference for Releasing of opposition figures and against the use of military tribunals to prosecute civilians

To Mr. Ambassador
We are deeply disturbed by the recent actions of the Egyptian authorities against democratic activists and prominent figures, and the use of military tribunals to prosecute civilians.
Many Egyptian people want more democratic and equal society. And the actions of your government are just opposite of what the people want.
We also deplore the denial of liberal dissident Dr.Ayman Nour his legal rights in prison. And especially we are very shocked by the use of military tribunals to persecute civilians. Those members of Muslim Brotherhood are civilians, and they have every right to have fair trial in civilian courts.
Moreover, one of your judges had declared invalid a presidential order that a group of Muslim Brotherhood members stand trial in a military tribunals. But your government has tried to go on the trial. This can't be justified.
Your government has kept saying that recent amendments to constitution is justifying this. But the constitutional amendments, which were approved in a referendum on 26 March, have been criticised by judicial and civil-society monitors as deeply flawed.
We stand in solidarity with all Egyptian citizens campaigning for their democratic rights, and we call on the your government to cease the practice of using military tribunals to prosecute civilians, and release all political detainees involved in democratization of Egyptian society immediately.
